So this is our Sunday download, a catch-up on the stories women should know before the week begins. Just the ones that say something about our bodies, work, rights, culture, money, safety, visibility, and lives.

We looked at the week for you. Here’s what mattered for women:
First of all, 23 states sue over new family-planning rules.

🌀 Greenland’s Forced Contraception Practices Violated Women’s Rights: Two new reports have renewed scrutiny of Denmark-era contraceptive practices in Greenland, where roughly 4,000 Indigenous women and girls some as young as 12 were given IUDs or hormonal contraception, often without informed consent. Denmark has approved compensation for eligible survivors.
Why It Matters: Reproductive freedom begins with the right to decide what happens to your own body. Recognition may come decades later, but it cannot return the choices those women lost.

⚖️ 23 States Sue Over New Federal Family-Planning Rules: A group of mostly Democratic-led states sued the Trump administration on August 27 over new conditions attached to Title X, the federal family-planning program that helps fund contraception, STI testing and cancer screenings for low-income patients.
Why It Matters: When funding rules change, the consequences can show up in very ordinary healthcare decisions whether someone can afford birth control, a screening or a clinic visit at all.

🤱 Lesotho Turns to More Male Midwives Amid Maternal Health Crisis: Lesotho now has an estimated 300 male midwives helping provide maternal care as the country confronts a maternal mortality rate of around 530 deaths per 100,000 live births. About 92% of births are now attended by trained health workers.
Why It Matters: When women are dying in pregnancy and childbirth, access to skilled care matters more than old ideas about who is supposed to provide it.

❤️ New Heart Attack Definition Could Improve Diagnosis in Women: Major global heart organizations have updated the universal definition of a heart attack to recommend sex-specific troponin thresholds, addressing a diagnostic standard that researchers say can contribute to heart injury being missed in women.
Why It Matters: Women’s heart attacks have historically been easier to overlook. Changing the clinical standard itself could mean fewer women being missed when they arrive needing urgent care.

⚡ Exelon Expands Jeanne Jones’ Role to Finance and Strategy: Exelon CFO Jeanne Jones will become executive vice president of finance and strategy on October 5, expanding her role to include the long term strategic direction of one of the largest U.S. utility companies.
Why It Matters: Senior finance roles already carry enormous influence. Adding strategy means having a larger say in where a major company invests, grows and goes next.

👩‍💼 More Than 123,000 Emirati Women Now Work in the Private Sector: The number of Emirati women employed in UAE private-sector jobs reached 123,388 in the first half of 2026, up more than 128% from 2023. Women now account for around 71% of Emiratis working in the private sector.
Why It Matters: Women entering the workforce is one measure of progress. Moving into skilled, professional and private-sector careers with greater earning and leadership potential is another.

🍎 North Carolina Teachers Get $2.25 Million to Clear Classroom Wishlists: A North Carolina foundation funded more than 3,200 classroom projects across over 1,000 schools this week. Teachers in the state spend an average of $1,632 of their own money on classroom supplies each year.
Why It Matters: Teachers regularly subsidize their own workplaces out of pocket, and because women make up most of the profession, that hidden cost lands disproportionately on them.

💰 Women-Led Capital F Closes $17 Million ‘Female Economy’ Fund: Women-led venture firm Capital F has closed a $17 million debut fund investing in women’s health, digital commerce and AI tools. Nearly 80% of the fund’s investors are women, and it has already backed 13 early-stage companies.
Why It Matters: Women are still underrepresented on the side of venture capital that decides who gets funded. This puts more women not just in the room asking for investment, but on the side writing the checks.

🏃‍♀️ Masai Russell Smashes 100m Hurdles World Record: Olympic champion Masai Russell ran 12.09 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League on August 27, breaking Tobi Amusan’s four-year-old women’s 100m hurdles world record of 12.12.
Why It Matters: Three hundredths of a second sounds tiny until it becomes the fastest performance any woman has ever recorded in the event.

🏑 Argentina Ends Dutch Dominance to Win Women’s Hockey World Cup: Argentina held three-time defending champions the Netherlands to a 1–1 draw before winning the shootout 3–1 on August 29, claiming their third Women’s Hockey World Cup title and first since 2010.
Why It Matters: The Netherlands had won three straight World Cups. Argentina’s victory did more than deliver another title it ended one of the strongest runs in women’s international sport.

🕊️ Dolly Parton Dies at 80: Country music icon Dolly Parton died on August 25 after a brief battle with cancer, ending a six-decade career spanning songwriting, film, business and philanthropy. She sold more than 100 million records and wrote thousands of songs.
Why It Matters: Parton built something women in entertainment have long fought for: creative ownership, business power and a career that never required her to become less herself as she grew older.

🎤 Olivia Rodrigo Raises $20 Million for Women and Girls: Olivia Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival brought together women-led acts including Chappell Roan, Doechii and Bikini Kill while generating $20 million for organizations working on women’s health, rights and workplace protections.
Why It Matters: Celebrity influence looks different when attention becomes infrastructure. Rodrigo is turning fandom into real funding for organizations doing the work on the ground.

🛟 Seven Women and Six Children Freed After Haiti Kidnapping: A Haitian gang has released seven women and six children who were among more than 50 people abducted during a deadly attack in Kenscoff. The assault killed at least 47 people, while the fate of other hostages remains unclear.
Why It Matters: Their release is a rare piece of good news inside Haiti’s worsening security crisis but it also shows how quickly ordinary family life can become dangerous when basic protection collapses.

🆘 Nigeria Launches Rescue Operation After Mass Kidnapping: President Bola Tinubu ordered security forces to launch an immediate rescue operation after gunmen abducted scores of people in Niger State. A video appeared to show what residents said were around 600 women, children and older people being held captive, though Reuters could not independently verify that number.
Why It Matters: Mass kidnapping has become frighteningly common in parts of Nigeria, and women and children are often among the most vulnerable when entire communities are taken.
