We looked at the week for you. Here’s what mattered for women:
First of all, America lost two architects of modern feminism within days of each other.

💊 Abortion-Pill Challenge Paused — For Now: A federal judge has paused Florida and Texas’ lawsuit seeking tighter nationwide restrictions on mifepristone while the FDA conducts a new safety review. The case is stayed until December 1 or until the review finishes. Medication abortion now accounts for more than 60% of U.S. abortions within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Why It Matters: One of the biggest remaining battles over U.S. abortion access hasn’t disappeared it has effectively moved into a waiting period while the FDA reassesses a drug it has approved for decades.

🪖 Kurdish Women Fighters Are Negotiating Their Place in Syria’s Future: Kurdish women who became internationally recognized for fighting Islamic State are now negotiating with Syria’s new authorities over their future role as Kurdish forces integrate into the country’s military. Women commanders say preserving women’s participation is part of those negotiations.
Why It Matters: These women fought in one of the region’s most consequential wars. Now the question is whether the political order that follows will make room for the women who helped shape it.

🩹 Women Are Struggling to Find Menopause Patches as Demand Surges: The FDA says it is working with six manufacturers to increase supplies of estradiol patches after women reported difficulty finding them. Demand has risen sharply after the FDA removed a longstanding warning from menopause hormone therapies; the agency has not formally declared a shortage.
Why It Matters: More women are seeking treatment for menopause just as medicine is reconsidering decades of fear around hormone therapy. Access now has to catch up with that shift.

🧠 Lindsay Clancy Trial Ends Without a Verdict: A Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial September 4 after jurors could not agree whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for killing her three children in 2023. Her defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis; prosecutors argued the killings were planned.
Why It Matters: The case puts one of the most severe, poorly understood postpartum illnesses into an uncomfortable intersection between maternal healthcare and criminal responsibility.

👩‍💼 Women Accounted for Nearly All U.S. Job Growth in August: Women gained roughly 158,000 of the 162,000 jobs added in August, meaning they accounted for about 98% of net job gains. Economists caution against overinterpreting a single month because gender splits can be volatile.
Why It Matters: The headline number is extraordinary, but where those jobs are being created and whether they bring good wages, stability and advancement matters just as much as how many exist.

📊 The U.S. Could Stop Collecting Workplace Gender Data: The EEOC is considering ending a decades-old requirement for larger employers to report workforce demographics including sex, race and job category. Businesses and former officials have argued the data is important for identifying discrimination and measuring pay equity.
Why It Matters: You cannot easily measure workplace inequality when the underlying data disappears. Gender gaps can become harder to prove precisely when employers stop being required to count them.

💰 New Finance Program Targets 34,000 Women-Led Businesses: The African Development Bank and AXIAN launched a program this week designed to improve access to credit, digital financial tools and business support for more than 34,000 women-led enterprises across five African countries.
Why It Matters: The funding gap for women entrepreneurs isn’t only about venture capital. For thousands of smaller businesses, access to ordinary credit and financial infrastructure can determine whether a business survives or scales.

🏡 One Woman Turned Her Retirement Savings Into Housing for Older Women: Seventy-year-old Texan Robyn Yerian used about $150,000 of her retirement savings to create an all-women tiny-home community offering below-market housing to older women.
Why It Matters: Older women are especially vulnerable to retirement insecurity because lower lifetime earnings and longer lives can leave less room when housing costs rise. Her solution turns one woman’s savings into a very literal form of economic safety.

🏀 WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Is Stepping Down: Engelbert will retire at the end of 2026 after seven years leading the league, a period that brought expansion from 12 teams toward 18, major new media deals and a labor agreement creating the league's first million-dollar player salaries.
Why It Matters: The person who oversaw the WNBA's transformation from an undervalued league into a rapidly expanding sports business is leaving just as its next era begins.

🏏 Smriti Mandhana Becomes Women’s Cricket’s All-Time Leading International Run-Scorer: India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana surpassed Mithali Raj’s career total on September 3, reaching 10,880 international runs after smashing 124 from 64 balls against Hong Kong at the Women’s Asia Cup.
Why It Matters: This isn't merely another century. One of this generation's biggest cricketers has overtaken one of women's cricket's defining records.

🎥 Maggie Gyllenhaal Calls Out Hollywood’s Gender Gap at Venice: While serving as jury president at the Venice Film Festival, Maggie Gyllenhaal used the festival spotlight this week to talk about the persistent imbalance between men and women behind the camera. She argued that cinema inevitably reflects politics and power including who actually gets to make it.
Why It Matters: Women have become far more visible on screen without gaining equal power behind it. One of the world’s biggest film festivals becoming a place to question who gets to direct, finance and shape culture makes that imbalance harder to ignore.

✊ Feminist Pioneer Robin Morgan Dies at 85: Writer, poet and activist Robin Morgan died September 5, just days after her longtime friend and collaborator Gloria Steinem. Morgan helped organize the landmark 1968 Miss America protest, edited Sisterhood Is Powerful and later co-founded the Women's Media Center with Steinem and Jane Fonda.
Why It Matters: Within days, the women's movement has lost two architects of American second-wave feminism — making this an unusual moment to look at what their generation changed and what remains unfinished.

📱 Americans Are Being Scammed at Record Levels: New polling reported by AP finds virtually every American has encountered attempted scams, while victims often struggle to find meaningful help after losing money and some are subsequently targeted again by scammers promising recovery.
Why It Matters: Modern scams increasingly exploit trust, loneliness and digital familiarity rather than obvious technical ignorance. Knowing what happens after someone is scammed may be as important as knowing how to avoid one.

📱 1 in 5 Teens Faced Online Sexual Abuse in Just One Year: A new UNICEF study covering roughly 21,000 young people across 21 countries found that about one in five 12- to 17-year-olds experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse in the past year. More than 15 million were exposed to unwanted sexual content, about 9 million were pressured into sexual conversations or images, and fewer than 1% of experiences were reported to authorities.
Why It Matters: Growing up online has created forms of sexual coercion that can enter a child’s life without anyone physically entering the room. And when almost none of it reaches authorities, families and platforms are being asked to confront harm that largely remains invisible.
